Free Electricity From Octopus.
One of the many reasons I love Octopus Energy is when you get emails such as the one below. Free electricity for one hour on the Thursday night and a whole three hours on the Saturday between 12 – 3pm.
I have a number of solar panels and a Tesla Powerwall II home battery as well as two electric cars. Free electricity in the evenings is really beneficial as the solar panels are not generating and I can switch off the Powerwall and use as much as I can for free.
Not only does this help me but is also helps to benefit the National Grid.

So Thursday evening saw me charging Karen’s Fiat 500e for an hour, the dishwasher and the washing machine all for nothing.
Then I was notified about the three hours on Saturday. When Saturday came I turned off the Tesla Powerwall and put my Kia Niro EV on charge, the tumble dryer and the Eddi for heating the water. Now day time free electric is not so good on sunny days as my solar array is capped at 5 kWh but this time of the year when its cold and cloudy then free electricity makes a big difference.
Between 12 noon and 3 pm I had as many appliances on as I could and the Powerwall switched off. Despite there being some solar generation I still managed to download 15 kW of free electricity. It had heated my water for free, charged the car and dried the washing. Come 3pm I switched the Powerwall II back on and had 100% still in the battery so it would not need to download any cheap rate electricity overnight – a win win situation.
