A Beginners Wood Turning Project – Kitchen Roll Holder
A few weeks ago I made a kitchen role holder for Karen. I found an odd Tulip wood blank left over from a sack full of wood turning blanks I had bought from eBay years ago.
These blanks worked out at just under a £1.00 each when I bought them.
I had an old piece of 4×2 soft pine in the corner of the shed so I set about making a very simple kitchen roll holder.
Our kitchen roll had occupied a space in a drawer until now, so I thought this would make access to the role quicker and easier.
It was annoying if we had a spillage on a work surface to pull the drawer out, find the role and then rip off a piece.
The kitchen roll holder was very easy to make from these scrap pieces of wood lying around my man cave.
Some days later my Son Adrian visited and saw the Kitchen Roll Holder and asked me if I could make him one.
That evening I went searching in my man cave and found another Tulip Wood blank and an old pole from a wind break.
I hate to waste anything so I set about making Adrian a similar kitchen roll holder. As the materiel were not exactly the same I knew it would look slightly different but that did not worry me.
I took some pictures of the process which you can see explained in the video clip below.

Now the eagle eyed among you will notice that the base turns out a lot lighter in colour than the first one.
When Adrian came over and I presented him with his gift he looked at it and said he preferred the colour on Karen’s base. To my annoyance Karen then said she preferred the colour of his base!
Which just goes to show you cannot please all of the people all of the time!
If you are looking for a new project for your lathe this was a really easy but useful thing to turn.
