Amazon describes the book:
Go with God and Fight Like the Devil. The remarkable new novel by Britain’s master storyteller, which culminates at the Battle of Poitiers.
1356: France stands alert to danger. The English army, victorious at the battle of Crécy and led by the Black Prince, is invading and the French are hunting them down. The bloodiest battles of the Hundred Years War are yet to be fought.
Thomas of Hookton, an English archer, becomes trapped with
his outnumbered army. And here, near the town of Poitiers, an extraordinary confrontation will ignite one of the greatest battles of all time.
My Own Thoughts On This Book::
I found this book on my Kindle whilst on holiday and realised I had downloaded it but not read it. I think that was because it was book 4 in a series and I intended to go back and read books 1-3 first. Alas I had no internet access and just run out of reading material so I launched into 1356 blind as it were.
The good news is that I did not need to read books 1-3 as this is almost a stand alone novel. The characters were so well written they sprang to life in my imagination very quickly.
Cornwall is a master of researching history on which to base his novels, the defeat of the French by the Black Prince in the Poitiers campaign was a vague recollection from my history lessons at school many years ago.
Cornwall brings it to life through Thomas of Hookton who sets about mad cardinals, overweight Counts and very sadistic churchmen at a great pace and keeps the reader glued to the story.
Chivalry, power and a virgin knight are all exposed in this fascinating book – I am glad I found it lurking on my kindle at my time of need.
